PROMISES

Promises are made intended for the keepin'
On the slopes of old Glencoe under windswept skies
August '91 the King offers a pardon
To the Highland clans so heathen and despised

The showing of allegiance to guarantee mortality
To quieten the rebels and their cause
Harmony and unity for those for whom conformity
Offers up the hope of something more

Promises are kept through the hours of daylight
Following the road as it snakes and winds
Over barren hills and through the highland rivers
Passing by Loch Leven deep and wide

The failing of the winter light late December New Year's night
Reaching Inverlochy before dawn
Ambushed by the hand of fate - the realisation all too late
The oath at Inverary should be sworn

Promises are sealed six days past the deadline
The MacDonalds give their word in the name of peace
But Campbell of Glenlyon with a grudge long in the making
And an army now assembled make their way

Given hospitality by those for whom conformity
Had offered up the hope of something more
Several days of harmony - an end to all hostility
Could it be that that peace had conquored war?

Promises are broken on the thirteenth day of February
At five a.m. before the break of dawn
Forty of the clan below the age of seventy
Never live to see another sun

No shelter on the hillside for those escaping treachery
Hunger and exposure take their toll
Immortalised in history there for all eternity
In memory of all those hopeful souls
Track Name: Beer mats
Beer Mats

Flip 'em and catch 'em do what you will with them
There on the table awaiting their fate
The view from the window all church spires and meadows
Trees in full leaf under cloudless blue sky
Lamenting the passing of the days of the Empire
When all was in order and one knew one's place
Long gone are the days of the hope and the glory
When Victoria ruled and the gas lamps all burned bright

Mismatched chair covers frayed at the edges
Ceiling joists covered in china cream jugs
Crisp packets folded into neat little triangles
Testament to some extraordinary mind
Applauding the breed of new politician
All media-friendly and always online
Blurred at the edges by a lack of distinction
Open on Sundays but closed for the rest of the week

Blackboard chalked up with the choice of sweet menu
No sign of suet in these health-concious times
Coffee replacing the tea of our childhood
The cheddar usurped by some foreign design
Remembering the days of the Great British Empire
When mad dogs and Englishmen all knew their place
Victorian values and Methodist morals
Temperance and abstinence - good for the soul

Time and technology marching us forward
Away from the drudge and the smoke of the past
To a so-called improved enlightened society
Where God and infinity still have the last laugh
Track Name: Watching swans
Watching Swans

I'm here because of circumstances
I don't know the consequences
It's so hard to know what to believe
Keep trying hard to analyse
But thoughts just circle all the time
There's never any sense of relief
I'm drifting in a seemingly endless sea
Time and space float by subconsciously

If I allow my thoughts to wander
I may drown in deeper water
I should stay safe at the shallow end
If you come looking I won't let you
Trick me into thinking that I
Could be worth much more than I pretend
I'm drifting in a seemingly endless sea
Time and space mean nothing much to me

And I'm watching swans
From this hotel window
Their serenity reflects my state of mind
I've been wasting time just watching the grass grow
But from now I'll forever be - watching swans

I'm here because of circumstances
I don't know the consequences
It's so hard to know what to believe
Keep trying hard to analyse
But thoughts just circle all the time
There's never any sense of relief
Track Name: Ribbons and Blows
Ribbons and Blows

Ribbons and Bows are curling my toes
When I realise that they’re not meant for me
And dressing up to the nines for another’s blue eyes
Is bringing me down to my knees

So tell me where do I stand?
In this lie of the land
Should you tell me what I want to hear?
Or just pretend to be cool when I’m nobody’s fool
Should I turn a blind eye and an ear?

Hear me,
Hear me,
Take it from someone who knows
I’ve spent half of the time being out of my mind
Cut to ribbons and felled by the blows

Well you can pray everyday for the saints and the sinners
For the hearts and the souls and the losers and winners
You can look for compassion so deep down within us
But they’ll never choose love over gold

After all of this time I can still remain blind
To those things that I'd rather not see
And I can still turn an ear
Tho' the words remain clear
Forever locked in bittersweet memory

I can see where I stand
In this lie of the land
But it’s not where I wanted to be
And though I know I’m a fool
Still I play by the rules
It's the way it was destined to be
Track Name: Stroud life
STROUD LIFE

This is my home
Out in the hills
It's been over six years
Since I moved out of town
Far away from the smoke
And the grind of commercial wheels going round and round
Adapting my ways
And slowing right down

Every Sunday
Holy Trinity church bells chime
Every weekday
You can find us in the pub at closing time

Look at those sheep
Out in the fields
They're all jumping around
And twitching their tails
They've got a spring in their step
As the sun shines down on their backs beneath the old green oaks
Busy growing the wool
For next year's gloves

See all them cows
Out on the heath
They're all hoofing around
And grinding their teeth
Causing traffic delays
And stealing all the sweet new shoots that the gardeners have grown
Laying around
On the golf course greens

See all those folk
Out on the town
They're all buying their stuff
All locally grown
International acclaim
For the farmers market held every Saturday
A colourful bunch
With their alternative ways

Every Sunday
Holy Trinity church bells chime
Every weekday
You can find us in The Crown after closing time
